The Nephilim, the product of the sons of god mingling with the daughters of Adam, the great Biblical giants, “the fallen ones,” the Rephaim, “the dead ones”—these descriptions are all applied to one group of characters found within the Hebrew Bible.
Who are the Nephilim? From where do the “heroes of old, the men of renown” come? Many authors would agree that based upon numerous ancient texts we can conclude that the ancient Nephilim could have been an ancient Alien species that lived on Earth in the distant past even though this is an extremely controversial notion for mainstream scholars who firmly oppose it. The Bible, the revealed written Word of God teaches that life is only possible through a process of creation. Even if there were other galaxies with planets very similar to Earth, life could only be there if the Creator had fashioned it.
If God had done that, and if these beings were going to visit us one day, then He would surely not have left us unenlightened about this Much has been said about the mysterious Nephilim, ancient beings that inhabited our planet in the distant past. These beings lived before the Great Flood and lived on after it, but their origin is far more mysterious than anyone knows. With all of the mystery that surrounds the Nephilim, is it possible that they were an ancient Alien species that came to Earth in the distant past?
The Nephilim (Hebrew: נְפִילִים, Nefilim) were a race that came to dominate the antediluvian (pre-flood) world, and are referred to in the Bible as the heroes of old, men of renown. They were reportedly the children born to the “Sons of God” by the “daughters of men”, and are described as giants. It is also most important to note that they are mentioned almost simultaneous to God’s statement that He would destroy the earth by flood, and it seems from this association that their effect upon mankind was one of the primary justifications that brought the destruction.
“Nephilim” is rendered fallen, or possibly feller: a tyrant or bully. Several English translations, such as the King James Version rendered the word “giants”. In the Greek Septuagint, the word “Nephilim” was also translated as “Gigantes” (gigantic). This translation is undoubtedly used because the Nephilim later became known as giants to the ancient Hebrews, as illustrated by the manner in which they were referenced when the Israelite spies were sent into Canaan (Numbers 13:33 )
Who are the Nephilim?
According to several ancient texts, it’s possible to conclude that the Nephilim were, in fact, mysterious beings that dominated the planet before the Great Flood. In many ancient texts, they are referred to as giants and some ancient texts suggest these mystery beings are in fact the descendants of the Fallen Angels. There is a great deal of confusion over the word Nephilim. No one today really knows what it means. It is related to the verb series “to fall” (naphal) in Hebrew, which is why some direct this to fallen angels or more appropriately, the offspring thereof. However, this also gives strong support to the view that men had fallen away from God.
Many have associated the Nephilim with giants. Giant traits may not have been limited to Nephilim alone: Goliath, a giant, was not considered Nephilim. As mentioned, the term Nephilim is unclear in the definition. It is related to the verb “to fall” and the King James Version translates it as giants from the influence of the Latin Vulgate’s (early Latin translation by Jerome) term Gigantes as well as the context from Numbers 13. The context of Genesis 6 does not reveal they were giants. There may have been some influence on the Latin Vulgate by the Septuagint’s (Greek translation of the Old Testament about 200–300 years before Christ) use of Greek word Gigantes.
However, despite many scholars trying to comprehend what the Nephilim were there is considerable confusion surrounding these mysterious beings which according to ancient texts, were real and inhabited Earth in the distant past. There isn’t doubt whether or not these beings were real, the only question that surrounds them is their actual origin and legacy.
God gave dominion to the man on the earth to rule His regent because the man was made in His image as a triune being. So only a triune man, made out of the dust of the earth, can have dominion under God.
Demons cannot take on flesh — there is nowhere in the Bible that says that they can. Of course, we know that angels, both heavenly and fallen, can appear in human form, but they remain spirit beings only. The Nephilim are described in great detail in the Book of Jubilees and Book of Enoch.
Both of these books have been traditionally rejected as apocryphal by the European Church. However, they were both considered canonical by the Ethiopic Church from the time of Christ until today, and the Book of Enoch was quoted in the Biblical Epistle of Jude. Jubilees has the following to say about the sons of God and the Nephilim:
“And in the second week of the tenth jubilee [449-55 A.M.] Mahalalel took unto him to wife Dinah, the daughter of Barakiel the daughter of his father’s brother, and she bare him a son in the third week in the sixth year, [461 A.M.] and he called his name Jared, for in his days the angels of the Lord descended on the earth, those who are named the Watchers, that they should instruct the children of men, and that they should do judgment and uprightness on the earth.” – Jubilees 4:15
The Book of Enoch has the following to say about them:
“It happened after the sons of men had multiplied in those days, that daughters were born to them, elegant and beautiful. And when the angels, the sons of heaven, beheld them, they became enamoured of them, saying to each other, Come, let us select for ourselves wives from the progeny of men, and let us beget children. Then their leader Samyaza said to them; I fear that you may perhaps be indisposed to the performance of this enterprise; And that I alone shall suffer for so grievous a crime.
Parts of the Book of Enoch tell the story of the evil angels who kidnapped and paired with human women, resulting in the creation of a hybrid race known throughout the secular and biblical history as the Nephilim.
Ever since its translation in 1800 from ancient texts discovered in Ethiopia in 1768, the Book of Enoch has created a stir in academic circles. Enoch has been proven to have existed and was mentioned before the existence of the church. Several copies of it were discovered in 1948 among the Dead Sea Scrolls. Some even believe we can trace backstories that have great similarities to Ancient Sumer.
According to the Book of Enoch (Not a Canonical Text), God judged the angels for producing the Nephilim. God decreed that the fallen angels (Watchers) were to be cast into Tartarus. The Nephilim were also judged, and it was determined that their bodies were to return to the earth in peace, but their souls were doomed to wander the earth forever (as) wandering spirits…
What happened to the Nephilim? The Nephilim were one of the primary reasons for the great flood in Noah’s time. Immediately after the mention of Nephilim, God’s Word says, “The LORD saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time. The LORD was grieved that he had made a man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain. So the LORD said, ‘I will wipe mankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth—men and animals, and creatures that move along the ground, and birds of the air—for I am grieved that I have made them’” (Genesis 6:5–7). God proceeded to flood the entire earth, killing everyone and everything other than Noah, his family, and the animals on the ark. All else perished, including the Nephilim (Genesis 6:11–22).
However, the truth behind the Nephilim is up for debate. Many scholars argue that the Nephilim were mythological beings that did not coexist with humans while other researchers firmly believe the Nephilim were not native to Earth and their origin can be traced back to planets outside of our Solar System. This has to lead many to speculate that both the Nephilim and beings referred to as Fallen Angles are in fact an Alien species not native to Earth.
